Selian Staff

Selian Lutheran Hospital has an outstanding staff committed serving the poor and sick. The Selian team is now 150 strong with nursing, medical, laboratory, and X-ray staff being locally trained and committed to wholistic care. The Selian medical staff is among the strongest is Tanzania.

Dr. Mark Jacobson is the Medical Superintendent. He is from the United States. In fact, he grew up in Stillwater, Minnesota. His father, Reuben Jacobson, was a Rotarian who belonged to the Stillwater Rotary Club which is the International Sponsor for this Matching Grant project. Dr. Jacobson trained at Harvard, the University of Minnesota, and Johns Hopkins University. He is Adjunct Professor of International Health and has eighteen years experience in tropical medicine in Tanzania.

The Stillwater Rotary Club was International Sponsor of a prior Matching Grant (MG 3806) in 1994. In fact, it was featured on page 49 of April, 1997 issue of The Rotarian Magazine.

Dr. Paul Kisanga is Chief of Surgery and trained first at the University of Dar es Salaam and then at Nairobi University.

Dr. Charles Sweke trained for fifteen years at Friendship University in Moscow and has both his MD degree and a PhD in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. M.A.O. Kipuyo directs the health work of the Lutheran Diocese. He trained at Makerere University in Uganda and Edinburgh in Scotland.

Dr. G. Kombe, our Ophthalmologist trained in India and Israel and is a former medical director of the Muhimbili Medical Center in Dar es Salaam.

Dr. Emil Mchaki is a general practioner trained in Cuba. He is a recent addition to our staff and has just been joined by Dr. Emil Malui, DDS who is our newest staff member. He is a dentist and has begun to develop our new dental unit at the Arusha Town Clinic.
